William Winkforth runs through the town Downstairs and up in his operating gown.
Every night, at five past 8, my mother sings me nursery rhymes. My father locks my windows, and with a mug of warm milk and Jack and Jill tumbling through my head, I lie back. Every night, at ten past 8, a chill wind whistles down the road, and the boys and girls don’t come out to play.
